#1 – What is the best moment you can remember in your career?
I am fortunate of having several memories that bring a smile to my face when they resurface, and therefore it would be difficult to single out a particular moment. I am privileged of having worked for companies that offered me the opportunity to grow in areas that passionate me, and that are all interlaced: I started my career in the Shipping sector in Athens, then moved to Geneva in Commodities, and I am now working in Risk in London.
Hopefully, the journey ahead is reserving additional sparkling highlights, but the international exposure and the opportunity to explore the commodity trading world from different angles is something that I find particularly enriching.
#2 – If you had to give just one piece of advice to a junior starting his/her career, what would it be?
As early as possible in your career, it is very important to understand what your passion is. If you are truly passionate about the work you are doing, then you will be breathing and living what you do. The energy, the hard work, the creativity, will then flow naturally and you will feel that you are riding the waves.
However, to stay on top of the curve, passion and talent need to be continually cultivated: find the time to keep learning and being up to date, even if this means staying up late at night or reading during weekends.
An additional piece of advice as a bonus: remember to have fun as you will be spending more time at work than with your family and friends!
#3 – Do you have a Motto/Lucky charm?
I would not say that I have a specific motto, but when I read something I do take note of the lines that I find inspiring. A quote of Aristotle Onassis resonates well in this moment where Commodities are experiencing choppy waters: “We must free ourselves of the hope that the sea will ever rest. We must learn to sail in high winds”.
#4 – What do you enjoy the most in your day to day job?
In my current role I am responsible of driving the development of our Risk business in Europe, the fastest growing business for Thomson Reuters. I appreciate the multi cultural environment and the fact that no two days are the same as I might be visiting clients, speaking to colleagues, or presenting at a conference anywhere in Europe.
#5 – If you had to do it again would you chose the same career path?
Yes, I find what I do particularly rewarding. Something that I would have done differently is to find earlier in my career a mentor to guide me in those situations that sometimes can be difficult to interpret.
#6 – Where is your favourite place on earth and why?
The tiny islets that constellate the Aegean. Being on a deserted beach listening to the sound of the waves is something that empties my mind and relaxes me.
#7 – How could you qualify your relationship with Ampersand World?
I would qualify it as a solid long term partnership. I still remember the first time we met few years back and I always recommend you to my contacts as I know I can count on your discretion and follow up. Also, something that makes you stand out is your holistic approach to talent management and that you really understand the markets you serve.
